Alan's research interests in Graduate school:
- Alan has always been fascinated by 3D & multi-dimensional geometry;
- His original research interest was crystal structures (and mathematical crystallography),
- (Thesis advisor wants him to develop a promising method for
- And he studies DNA codon sequences, to understand their effect on protein folding.
Studies the stereochemichal characteristics of specific amino acids, how linkages affect the next folding, etc.
After proposed thesis topic is rejected, Alan pursues it anyhow. (He is slightly obsessed with the idea, but cannot convince thesis advisor, cmte, etc.)
Eventually, he takes time off to pursue these ideas.
(A friend gives him access to idle "grid" computer power.)
This leads to a method for genetic synthesis of tissue/organ/protoplasmic-substance
which grows (cell reproduction), given nutrients (and energy).
(Nutrients can be produced from nearly any biomass, compost, etc.)
(Energy supplied by electrical devices; later, solar collectors suffice)

The Corporation

Biodyne, biofold _{know when to fold 'em (/codons)}, "stereobiology" )

This is applied to organ repair, etc. (incl making artificially-started natural organs,
but also repair of existing organs.
Corp is started.
Patents --> mfg
Very successful!
Goes public.

Alan backs away from management of Corp, does reseaarch as "Chief Scientist".
(He has been teaching at former college.)
(College contacts him about resuming studies + teaching!.
He does.
Completes degree (incl courses he designs & teaches before getting "credit").

Indonesian group (semi-terrorist) uses it to obtain political power in Africa,
(withholds food & technology, some violence).
Corp. acts -- lawsuits / US polit pressure (maybe military intervention) / foreign +++
Alan visits.
Alan meets Baliman.
Alan retakes company, licenses technology, etc.
Donations to charity. / Fund food production (but protect patents, etc.)
Nobel Peace prize for organization.
Nobel Chem prize (Chem????!!!!) for Alan.
